What is the Ideal Height for Your Office Desk?

At ORS, we’d like to think we know a thing or two about office furniture and in particular, office desks! Whether you’re in an office or working remotely from home, many of us find ourselves spending a significant amount of time seated at our desks. So we thought it might be helpful to go through some factors to consider when trying to determine the ideal height for your office desk.

What is the Standard Height of a Desk?

The standard height of a desk in the UK is typically set at 73cm (or 28 inches). This measurement is widely adopted by manufacturers to accommodate the average adult population, allowing for variations in individual height and ergonomic preferences.

How High Should My Desk Be?

So what should you do if you happen to be shorter or taller than the average person? Luckily, there’s a simple formula to work out the ideal desk height for you.

Your Height in Inches + 1 = Desk Height in CM

For example:

  • Your height = 5.10 feet or 70 inches
  • Add 1 = 71 inches
  • Change to cm = 71cm

Although the above formula is a good rule of thumb, finding the perfect desk can sometimes require a bit more experimentation.

Here’s what we would advise:

Measure from the floor: Measure the distance from the floor to your elbow while your arms are at a 90-degree angle. This will give you another measurement for your desk height.

Adjustable desks: Opting for a height adjustable desk allows you to customise the height based on your individual preferences. With the ability to switch between sitting and standing positions, adjustable desks promote movement and reduce the risk of prolonged sitting-related health issues.

Consider a footrest: If your desk height doesn’t allow your feet to rest comfortably on the floor, consider using a footrest to maintain proper posture and circulation.

And if you’re also trying to choose an office chair, don’t forget to consider the measurements for both so that you fit properly.

The Height of Your Desk Matters

Does the height of your desk really matter? We think so! A desk that is too high or too low can lead to discomfort, strain on your body, and potential long-term health issues.

A desk set at the correct height promotes a comfortable sitting posture. Your feet should rest flat on the floor, and your knees should be at a 90-degree angle. This position helps prevent strain on your lower back and promotes better circulation.

A properly adjusted desk height also ensures that your computer monitor or laptop is at eye level. This alignment helps reduce neck and eye strain, preventing long-term issues such as eye fatigue or forward head posture.
